The Bible is a collection of old documents! Some of them are historical accounts of events, some are poetic, some are prophetic, and others are a mixture of all of these. The first books talk of God's creation of the world and of man, and how man was originally made perfect by God. however, God gave man a free will, and man chose to rebel against God.
This rebellion had the effect of cutting man off from God due to sin. Sin is rebellion against God, and it is this which separates us from our Creator today. God is a just God, and Sin demands punishment, and the only punishment that is sufficient to pay the price for our sin is death. Yes - In God's eyes I am worthy of death.
BUT - God loves us so much that he gave us a way out of this separation from Himself and the death which is deserved. He sent us Jesus Christ - fully man, yet fully God, and consequently perfect in every way.
Jesus died on a cross in a humiliating death, in which He took the punishment that I deserve. Consequently, because Jesus took that punishment, God's justice has been done, and I have been set free to enjoy a relationship with God. All that is needed is for me to ask God for forgiveness, and to commit to following Him.
This, in a nutshell, is why I am a Christian - because Jesus was either mad, bad or God. Read His claims for yourself in John's Gospel (towards the back of the Bible) And then draw your own conclusions about who Jesus is.
